Ludlow Farm Shop, situated just north of Ludlow, is a part of the Earl of Plymouth’s Oakly Park Estate. It’s a renowned food hall and restaurant known for its quality and provenance, primarily sourcing 80% of its produce from Shropshire and neighbouring counties. Here’s a breakdown of some of its sections:
Bakery
Visitors are welcomed by the aroma of freshly-baked bread and cakes. The bakery hosts weekly tasting sessions and showcases bread-making, including kneading sourdough from a 21-year-old mother dough and decorating specialty cakes like red velvet.
Preserves
The shop offers a selection of jams made in small batches using traditional methods. Flavors range from classic damson and gooseberry to unusual ones like wild wimberry. They have also expanded to lime and blackcurrant curds.
Butchery
All the meat comes from the nearby Oakly Estate. The process, from rearing to selling, occurs within a 6-mile radius. The butchery features Gloucester Old Spots pigs and aged beef, alongside seasonal game like pheasant and venison.
Cheese-making
The shop produces seven types of cheese, including the only true Shropshire Blue made in the county. They also offer a Stilton-styled cheese called ‘Remembered Hills.’
Dining and Beverages
The Ludlow Kitchen café provides a spot for lunch, offering local wine and spirits like Hereford Cider Brandy. They also sell home-roasted Mercanta coffee beans, which have received 2 Great Taste Awards.
I've been coming here for years, it's always been pricey, but worth it for the quality and variety of the products available. I visited again recently after 6 months or so and honestly I'm so disappointed. For example, you used to get a two pack of brownies for a decent price, now it's the same price for just one! The portion sizes of a lot of their on site made products have gone down and the prices gone up, it's so sad! They seem to sell more brought in tat that you can get from other shops for cheaper too.Not to mention Ludlow kitchen, which again has gone so downhill since I last visited. Was told there was a 30 min wait for food, then told there wasn't which was good, but when we went to order we were told what we wanted wasn't in stock but the alternative was, so we ordered that. After nearly 20 mins of waiting and the chefs looking angry, we were approached and told there was actually none of what we ordered available now. But we saw multiple orders of what apparently wasn't left originally being taken out only a couple minutes prior and AFTER? The server was lovely though and sorted us out, so I can't fault the servers or the manager who was very apologetic when giving us the refund for the two unavailable plates.I'm not sure what's happened, whether a change of owner, manager etc but it just doesn't have the home-y, community feel anymore. I grew up in Ludlow and to see these places cater only for the "better off people" in the area will just mean you lose vital, loyal, local customers. Good luck.
Amazing! Loved the farm shop itself and stopped off at the cafe to have lunch - we nearly avoided it due to previous reviews on here, but so happy we decided to give it a shot. The food was really fresh, amazing quality and great service. We will definitely be back when in the area!
Very disappointing. The shop was very expensive even though nothing was organic, we made the mistake of not checking the use by dates ourselves. The scones we bought in the cafe were dry and unpleasant and the ordering system, using QRcodes, was akin to a motorway service station. Not a pleasant experience and definitely not a go to destination. We would have had a better experience and probably better food by going to McDonalds or Greggs.
The selection of fresh produce is poor and some rotting in the stall. Bread is bought in by the looks of it, not made in store. The sausage rolls etc portion size is made for a hobbit but at full price. It’s just too expensive for what it’s worth.
We had a disappointing breakfast here yesterday ; the sausages had obviously been reheated from the previous day - they were tough and very dry .We used to visit regularly for breakfast and it was excellent then .The recent introduction of paying at the till to order means that you cannot request any additional items such as a further cup of coffee from a waitress whilst eating breakfast. Unbelievable that you actually have to go up to the till to do this. The previously high standards have fallen.
Found this place on our way back from Wales. Stopped to have a cuppa and the most amazing bacon and maple syrup pancakes. Then had a wander in the gift shop and started Christmas shopping early! Will visit again when in the area
One of the vest farm shops I’ve ever seen. Not only did they have a vast range of locally sourced and handmade food, but also a café, takeaway, accommodation, a distillery, and in a few days' time, a new addition: a gift shop.
Lovely food to try in the farm shop such as honey and jam. Loads of different foods to buy. We had a lovely lunch in the cafe and even though the food was probably already pre made it came out super quickly and was very delicious and hot. It was very busy and the staff were extremely friendly, polite and quick! Thank you 🤩
I think my definition of a farm shop and what this is vastly different. This place is so over commercialised (something to an excessive) it's spoiled it's roots. The cafe is so busy and expensive. The shop is very well tended. Toilets clean. If fairness the rating of 3 is the whole site and experience. The Pie Pie was very very tasty and 10/10 and would recommended
Have bought their cheese with no name for the last couple of years, but every time I buy it there is less and less taste to the point I won’t buy it again. I bought some last week and it was tasteless
I bought 2 jars of Ludlow Farm Shop's own marmalade, £4.99/jar, marked 2 for £8.00, on Aug 15th. Upon checking my account I see that I was charged £8.99.Marmalade is good, but and slightly irritated re the pricing.
We went to Ludlow farm shop for some lunch and it was a major disappointment. For a farm shop, I expected more choice to be honest but we opted for a Greek style flatbread and salad. The flat bread was so dry like it was a week old and very hard going, after a couple of tries we both gave up on the bread. Also the chicken was in cubes, so was frozen rubbish rather than quality meat. The drinks weren’t that great either. Overall a massive disappointment.
Was expecting farm shop quality food for the price in the coffee shop but the sandwich resembled what you would buy in a Tesco meal deal. Milkshake tasted like Nesquik powder.
Pasty pastry was raw but also super dry. They also had no flavour at all. Wouldn’t recommend. The sandwiches looked like they had seen better days. Expensive coffee considering you have to make it yourself. The ice cream was fab and the farm shop was cute but overpriced.
Visited Fri 24 May. Takeaway coffee today tasted very bitter. Disappointing. Visited Fri 17 May takeaway coffee was delicious. What type of coffee beans used today 24th May?
Love quality food and attend many food festivals. Visited from Nantwich just over a week ago. I was quite shocked at the dreadfully poor quality of the vegetables. Having worked as a senior manager in a large greengrocery and health foods organisation I can honestly say we would have binned a lot of the greens on display. Also grossly overpriced. I suggest you exercise a bit of quality control and also take a look at some top-quality farm shop displays. Take a trip to Hollies near Tarporley, Cheshire. You might learn something.
Called in today for a spot of breakfast. We had a problem with my meal due to my allergy issues which I flagged to our server (whom I believe was also the manager so was nice to see that everyone chips in to help out). Our server took our concerns straight to the kitchen staff to and redo both sets of food allowing me and my partner to be able to eat at the same time instead of her eating her food on her own and she even offered a complementary drink as well. She checked in with us several times throughout to make sure everything was ok. It was great to see how seriously food allergies, dietary requirements and even food preferences are taken at this establishment and how friendly and accommodating the staff are.
Nice farm shop... But having the poor staff standing for full days at the tills is clearly taking it's toll. They were all very polite but morale looked incredibly low in the shop, cafe, and ice cream shop, which has a knock-on effect on customer experience. Why not provide them with tall stools to sit on, like other retail establishments?? The discomfort was clear... dvt waiting to happen. This isnt the 1800s. Happy staff, happy customers!
The new queuing x2 system has made it much like an impersonal service station. People who are disabled or very frail will struggle to queue twice for a table & an order. A simple special button on table waiting service for them only. There needs to be a system to help these scenarios at the managers discretion.Eg an easier ordering & payment system. Some accessible thinking & more equality please!I saw a couple leave who would have enjoyed, but couldn’t manage this system. It wasn’t accessible for their needs. Frail & needing to support their spouse. It was a very poor show.Modern thinking for all & more flexibility needed.
A good selection and range of local produce, however, the quality of the meat and vegetarian pies and pasty we bought were very disappointing. They lack any flavour across the four products and all were surrounded by overworked pastry. Hopefully, these are not reflective of what is normally produced.
Stopped at the Ludlow Farm Pantry driving home from Cardiff for a break and something to eat. Arrived at 3.40pm pantry shuts at 4.00pm. lady serving a customer with a hot pasty. I asked for the same and was abruptly told sorry no hot food I have to clean. Horrible service won't be calling back. 🥟😒
Went to the farm shop. Nice but very expensive (as to be expected in that kind of establishment). Tried to go to the kitchen as it said dogs were welcome in the conservatory (said this both online and on the information board outside the shop), only to be told that no dogs allowed as they didn't want to open the conservatory as they didn't have enough staff and we would get forgotten! Another couple with a dog also had the same experience at the same time, however they even tried to compromise and say could they sit outside on the benches, to which they were told they could but they wouldn't get any food served to them. Seemed very rude and not very welcoming. Totally understand dogs are not allowed in main restaurant area but don't advertise dogs allowed in conservatory area if you're going to turn away two groups of people with dogs because you will "forget them" and not serve them any food.. weird and a waste of time as we only went due to it being a so called dog friendly place. 👎
Nice looking farm shop , however most of the items in the farm shop are also in supermarkets . And in here they are significantly more expensive . Takes away from a “farm shop” for me a farm shop has things you don’t usually find in supermarkets from small local companies etc …
Eat in the cafe. Bit dissapointed as I requested for the bacon crispy and sausages well done but they didn't do it. Food took a while too but it was busy. On the way out I bought a cake. I asked the lady if the same cakes were sold in the farm shop. She told me they were cheaper to buy in the cafe. So I bought a cake for £2.50.Went to the farm shop and saw the same cake for 99p. Was really dissapointed. It was the principle, not the £1.50 extra.Spoke to a really helpful assistant at the farm shop named Lisa, who managed to rectify the issue and refund me £2.50 off my total bill at the farm shop. Really helpful and polite and went above and beyond. Thanks Lisa, if it wasn't for you this would have been a 1 star review as due to the experience in the cafe.Would visit again if passing by.
The portion of food and drinks should be of better quality and satisfaction, compared to the price of a small cup of coffee and cold brie bacon sandwiches, the bacon was as hard as a Nail and supper cold, never experienced brie and bacon saver cold in the winter time! No salad just on their poor quality
A lovely farm shop full of loads of goodies. We also enjoyed a late breakfast here. The staff in the cafe are lovely. Very busy, but the service was quick.
We happened upon this place whilst driving home (and helping to rescue a broken down vehicle opposite on the main road)! Lots of lovely fayre available, we enjoyed a delicious sausage roll and pasty with a lovely coffee from the takeaway pantry. Would imagine it’s lovely around Xmas time too!
Great place, with a variety of products, lovely layout. I would say more expensive than the supermarkets but lovely fresh homemade pies ect. A lot of artisan products. Nice to go occasionally
What a fantastic farm shop - showcasing local produce with an incredible variety. My favourite thing about the Farm Shop was that to the sides of the shop at each section (cheese, butchers, jams, breads & deserts) there was a room with windows looking in showing where the produce was made! This is a great insight. The whole shop is beautifully presented and has a vast array of stock. Staff were all very helpful and service was fast.We came away far from empty handed and will return again every time we pass.
On our visit to Ludlow and the surrounding area ,we thought we would pop into the farm shop for a look around.... It's quite a large shop with plenty of produce to choose from, the fruit and vegetables all looked lovely and fresh.....There are so many different products on sale here ,far too many to mention....It is on the site of a plant centre and Ludlow kitchen where you can get some refreshments, there is plenty of parking making it a worthwhile visit....👍
This is a brilliant shop with an incredible range of local produce! I don’t understand what all the bad reviews are about- this shop is extremely a great stop for drivers and you can find all manner of foods, as well as perfect gifts such as biscuits and luxury artisanal goods or hampers. The commitment to stocking fresh, locally sourced produce is admirable, and the range of organic produce is vast. However, I would warn that the honeycomb is not British- it’s Bulgarian, so I was a bit peeved after spending 15 pounds on it. Overall, it’s a great shop that is definitely worth a visit.
